You take a break to reset. You come back, sit down, and the focus never shows up. The break wasn’t too short. Something followed you into it.

I used to think I had a stamina problem.

I’d get a solid block going, stop for lunch or a call, and come back to nothing. Same desk, same task, same coffee. But the first twenty minutes were mush. So I did what everyone does — I went looking for advice on deep work recovery, and all of it was about timing. Ninety-minute cycles. Pomodoro. Work sprints and rest ratios, like the answer was a number I hadn’t found yet.

None of it worked, because I was solving the wrong problem.

The thing wrecking the next block wasn’t the length of my break. It was the thing I walked away from without finishing.

What actually happens when you switch

Sophie Leroy, who researches this at the University of Washington Bothell, gave it a name: attention residue. In her 2009 paper, she found that when you move from one task to another, part of your attention stays behind on the first one. You’re physically on task B. A chunk of you is still running task A in the background.

The result is measurable. People performed worse on the second task, because they had less attention available for it.

Here’s the part that changed how I work.

The residue is worst when you leave something unfinished — and it gets worse still when you’re dreading the return. In Leroy’s words, it happens when we “anticipate that once we have a chance to get to the unfinished or pending work we will have to rush to get it done.”

Read that again. It isn’t the interruption that costs you. It’s the open loop plus the low-grade dread of having to sprint through it later.

My reality: I’d stop mid-task and tell myself I’d pick it back up after. Then I’d carry a quiet hum of you’re behind, you’ll have to hammer this later into every minute of the break. And wonder why the break didn’t restore anything.

It restored my body. It never touched the loop. That gap between how something feels and whether it works shows up everywhere in learning — it is the same trap as re-reading a page and mistaking familiarity for memory.

Why more break doesn’t fix it

This is why the timing advice fails so many people. Ninety minutes, twenty-five minutes, five-minute pause, hour-long lunch — none of those numbers do anything about an open loop. You can rest for two hours and still return with residue, because the loop was never closed. You just spent two hours carrying it.

That reframes the whole question. Deep work recovery isn’t about the break being long enough. It’s about leaving cleanly.

The one-minute fix that actually works

Leroy and Theresa Glomb tested an intervention in 2018, and it’s almost annoyingly simple.

Before you switch away, take about a minute to write down where you are and what you’re doing next. They called it a ready-to-resume plan. Across four studies, it reduced attention residue, and performance on the next task no longer suffered.

That’s it. Not a longer break. Not a better ratio. A minute of writing before you stand up.

The reason it works is that it answers the exact thing your brain is anxious about. The loop stays open because some part of you doesn’t trust that you’ll remember where you were or have time to finish. Writing it down settles both. You’ve made the return concrete, so the dread has nothing to feed on.

How I do it now

Before I leave any block of real work:

  1. Write the last thing I did. One line. “Finished the second section, numbers verified.”
  2. Write the exact next action. Not “keep working on the article.” Something like “write the limitations section, start with the sample size point.”
  3. Write anything I’d otherwise carry. The thought I’d chew on during lunch. On paper, it stops being cargo.
  4. Then leave. Fully. The plan is the permission.

It takes under a minute and it’s the difference between a break that restores something and a break that just relocates the stress. It also pairs with the wider set of strategies that work when you’re teaching yourself, where the recurring theme is closing loops rather than opening more.

If you only take one thing: the note isn’t for later. It’s for right now. It’s what lets you actually put the work down.

When you don’t need it

Not every stop needs a ritual. If you finished the thing, you’re done — completion already gives you closure, which is exactly what the research says. The plan is for the messy middle: interrupted, half-done, walking away with the shape of it still in your head.

It also isn’t a fix for having too much on. A ready-to-resume plan closes a loop. It doesn’t reduce the number of loops you’ve opened. If everything is unfinished all the time, that’s a workload problem wearing a focus costume — and no amount of learning how to learn fixes an overloaded week.

What this research doesn’t say

Being straight about the limits:

  • These were controlled studies of task switching, largely with student and working samples. They didn’t test every kind of work or every kind of person.
  • Attention residue is measured through performance and self-report. Nobody is scanning your brain and pointing at residue.
  • It says nothing about the ideal break length, or the ideal work block. That question was never what the studies were about — which is precisely the point, since it’s the question everyone asks.
  • Writing a plan reduced the effect. It didn’t eliminate it. Some residue is the price of switching at all.

The takeaway

I spent a long time trying to fix my focus with better break timing, and the timing was never the variable.

The next block doesn’t start when you sit back down. It starts with how you left the last one. Close the loop on paper, then go — and let the break do what a break is supposed to do.
