Level Up Smarter is about method: how you read, remember, focus and learn. This page is about the other half of the equation — the biological substrate that method runs on. You cannot out-technique a depleted brain.

Below are ten compounds with genuine research behind them, written the way we write everything else here: what the evidence actually examined, what it did not, and where the popular claim runs ahead of the data. Where we stock something, we say so and link to it. Where the evidence is weak, we say that too.

Focus and Attention

Alpha-GPC

Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter most closely tied to attention and to encoding new material. Building it requires choline, and Alpha-GPC is among the more bioavailable sources — it crosses the blood-brain barrier where cheaper forms like choline bitartrate largely do not. Most useful before a demanding block of work rather than as a background supplement.

Citicoline

Citicoline supplies choline and cytidine, the latter feeding the phospholipids that make up neuronal membranes. The branded Cognizin form carries most of the human research, including trials in healthy adults rather than only clinical populations — a meaningful distinction, and one worth checking before you buy generic.

L-Theanine

The amino acid in green tea, and the reason tea feels different from coffee. Paired with caffeine it produces one of the most reliably replicated findings in the cognitive literature: attention improves while the jitteriness of caffeine alone drops. If you only try one thing on this page, this is the cheapest and best-evidenced place to start.

L-Tyrosine

A precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine. The research is specific and worth reading carefully: benefits show up under stress, sleep loss and heavy cognitive load, and largely disappear in rested, unstressed subjects. That is a genuine finding, not a limitation — but it means a calm afternoon is the wrong place to test it.

Memory and Learning

Creatine

Best known for physical performance, where the evidence is about as strong as sports nutrition gets. The cognitive research is newer and concentrates on performance under fatigue, particularly sleep deprivation. It works by saturating tissue stores over weeks, so consistency matters far more than timing, and it is among the cheapest compounds here.

Lion’s Mane

Studied for its relationship to Nerve Growth Factor, a protein involved in maintaining and repairing neurons. This is a different mechanism from stimulants, and it behaves differently: nothing happens on day one. Trials run for weeks. Treat it as an investment in the substrate rather than a tool for today’s deep work session.

Bacopa Monnieri

An Ayurvedic herb with a real evidence base for retention of newly learned material — which makes it unusually relevant to anyone deliberately studying. The human trials run 8 to 12 weeks. Judge it at two weeks and you will conclude it does nothing, which is exactly what the trial design would predict.

Stress and Stamina

Rhodiola Rosea

Used in demanding performance environments since the 1940s and studied for mental fatigue, burnout and attention under fatigue rather than for baseline cognition. Best taken in the morning; taken late it is too activating for some people. Look for extracts standardised to rosavins and salidroside, since unstandardised material varies wildly.

Sleep and Structure

Sleep is where memory consolidates. Every technique we teach here — spaced repetition, active recall, deliberate practice — depends on it. Two compounds sit in this layer.

Magnesium L-Threonate

Ordinary magnesium forms are fine for muscle and sleep but do not raise magnesium levels in the brain particularly well. L-threonate was developed specifically to do that, and it is the form used in the cognitive research. Usually taken in the evening, since it supports sleep quality alongside its other effects.

DHA

DHA is a structural fat in brain tissue — your brain is partly built from it. Most fish oil is formulated for cardiovascular health and therefore leads with EPA, so check the ratio rather than the headline omega-3 number. Oxidised fish oil is a common and genuine problem, which makes third-party testing matter more here than in most categories.

Where to start

Honestly: with sleep, and with whichever of these addresses your actual limiting factor. A nootropic will not fix a focus problem caused by six hours of sleep, and an adaptogen will do more for a chronically stressed person than any stimulant.

Our sister store Level Up Self carries all ten and publishes a fuller ingredient reference, plus a short questionnaire that builds a starting protocol from your goals and sleep.
